Staged Upgrades for Meraki Switches

This feature is currently in BETA and will include bugs. Known issues are listed below. Please read this article in full before using this feature.  Please contact Cisco Meraki Technical Support to have this feature enabled.

Staged upgrades for the Meraki Switches allow for the ability to schedule multiple upgrade windows for specific switches within a switch network. This allows for better planning and control in the deployment of new switch firmware. This feature should not be confused with the current firmware upgrade/visibility feature found under Organization > Monitor > Firmware Upgrades.

Some use cases include:

  • Testing a new build in a segment of the network
  • Upgrading a network in phases/layers

How to schedule multiple firmware switch upgrade windows

  1. Schedule an upgrade for the switch network via the firmware upgrade tool.
    1. Navigate to Organization > Monitor > Firmware Upgrades.
    2. Select the network to upgrade.
    3. Click Schedule upgrades.
    4. Select the target firmware version and click Next.
    5. Click Schedule the upgrade for, and enter the time you would like the upgrade to occur. It is recommended to schedule this upgrade for the last planned upgrade window. Click Next.
    6. Accept the summary of changes.
  2. Schedule individual firmware upgrade windows.
    1. Navigate to Switch > Configure > Staged Upgrades. By default, all switches will be scheduled for the upgrade window set in step 1.
    2. Click the Scheduling tab.
    3. Under  Upgrade policy, select Specify custom schedule.
    4. Click Add upgrade window. A new window will be created.
    5. Select the date and time, as well the switches to upgrade. If additional windows are required, repeat from step 2d.
    6. Click Save.
  3. Click the Upgrade Status tab.  You should now see all the scheduled upgrade windows.

FAQ

What happens if I cancel the upgrade after at least one window has passed?

There is an ability to cancel each individual update or rollback past windows in the Organization > Monitor > Firmware Upgrades page.  There is currently an issue in the UI, where rollbacks and cancellations are processed, but not reflected in the Staged Upgrades Status page.  If there are any concerns, please reach out to Cisco Meraki Technical Support.
