Updated status colors

What has changed?

Meraki’s status colors have been updated to improve visibility for all users. The most noticeable change is updating the positive color to use a light blue instead of green. Our user research found that these colors make issues easier to spot at a glance, and they are better for users with vision disabilities.

Why are we making this change?

"Everybody in" and "care deeply" are 2 of Meraki's core values that embrace inclusion and taking care to understand the many ways that people may experience our products and platforms.

Approximately 1 in 12 males and 1 in 200 females have some degree of color vision deficiency, which can make differentiating between colors more difficult. The most common form of color vision deficiency is red-green, making it very difficult to differentiate between those colors. In the Meraki dashboard where green has historically been used to communicate something "positive" and where red was used to communicate the opposite, this can be particularly problematic.

Color vision deficiencies can vary greatly in severity; many people with a color vision deficiency may not even be aware that they could benefit from an "accessible mode", so by implementing this new status color palette, we can ensure that all users benefit from this more accessible and usable color palette.

What are the benefits?

  • Easier to see the status of networks at a glance

  • Easier to quickly see devices that need attention

  • Better in low light situations

  • Easier for users with and without a color vision deficiency to differentiate between status colors

Who will benefit from this change?

Everyone! Before making this change, we thoroughly researched and directly compared the performance of the updated color palette against the previous palette with Meraki customers. Our research confirmed that both users with and without self-identified color vision deficiencies were able to more easily differentiate between "positive" and "negative". It also helped them focus more quickly on items that required their attention.
