How to Configure a Static IP Address on MX and Z-Series Devices

Overview

This article explains how to configure a static IP address on a Cisco Meraki MX appliance or Z-series teleworker gateway.

MX appliances and Z-series teleworker gateways use either dynamic or static network connection information. You can assign a static IP address in two ways:

  • Through the Meraki Dashboard.

  • Locally, by connecting directly to the device.

After you assign the address, you can verify the configuration on VPP-enabled devices. If you specify a VLAN in the static IP configuration, the MX sends its traffic tagged with 802.1Q for that VLAN.

Prerequisites

  • A Cisco Meraki MX appliance or Z-series teleworker gateway.

  • Access to the Meraki Dashboard, or local access to the device through the management port or a LAN port.

  • Login credentials for local configuration. Use the credentials configured through Dashboard. Otherwise, use the device's serial number as the username and a blank password. Each device is labeled with its serial number on the bottom label.

The MX security appliance must be able to communicate with the Meraki cloud to apply this configuration change through Dashboard. If the MX is offline, it does not receive the static IP information from the Meraki Dashboard until it downloads its configuration file from the cloud.

MX security appliance and Z-series teleworker gateway devices do not support a /32 subnet mask on a WAN interface.

Step-by-step instructions

Assign a static IP through dashboard

  1. Browse to dashboard.meraki.com and log in to Dashboard

  1. Navigate to Security & SD-WAN > Monitor > Appliance status, then select the Uplink tab. The Uplink tab shows status information about the uplinks and lets you perform uplink configuration.

Appliance status page tool bar with uplink tab selected.

  1. Select the pencil icon to expand the WAN IP configuration for that uplink.

Assign a static IP locally

  1. Connect a client to the MX. Access the local status page through the management port or through the LAN ports.

  1. Once you obtain an IP address, browse to wired.meraki.com

  1. Select Configure

  1. Log in when prompted. Use the local login credentials if they were configured through Dashboard. Otherwise, use the device's serial number as the username and a blank password.

Verification

Verify the static IP on VPP-enabled devices

Troubleshooting

If the MX cannot reach the default gateway on the static assignment, it falls back to DHCP.
