vMX X-Large Cancellation FAQ

vMX X-Large Cancellation FAQ

1. What is Cisco announcing?

On May 15, 2025, Cisco is turning off orderability for the Meraki vMX X-Large (vMX-XL) virtual router/appliance.

2. Why is this happening?

We are stopping work on the current vMX-XL firmware and therefore the vMX-XL itself.

3. Which Meraki MX models are affected?

The Meraki vMX-XL is the only model being taken off the market.

The Meraki vMX-S, vMX-M, and vMX-L will remain on the market and orderability will not be affected.

4. Can I continue to use my existing vMX-XL instances after May 15, 2025?

Yes, but this is highly discouraged as vMX-XL will not receive any firmware or security updates. You may continue to use your current vMX-XLs for the time being but you should be actively working to migrate to one of the other vMX instance types (S/M/L). In the case of an outage, you may contact Meraki Support, who will work best effort to restore the appliance; however, no additional support will be provided for any new issues on the vMX-XL.

5. How is the functionality of the current vMX-XL different from the other available models (S/M/L)?

The current vMX-XL is only available as a VPN concentrator on AWS and lacks the full vMX functionality.

6. Will I need to replace my existing vMX-XLs with new virtual appliances?

Yes, we recommend moving off of any vMX-XL instance your are running. We recommend re-deploying with one of the currently available vMX (S/M/L). If you have questions on which vMX is right for you organizaiton, we recommend reaching out to your account team for assistance.

Since vMX is a virtual appliance, there will be no need to RMA the device; only re-deployment of the vMX virtual machine will be required.

7. Where can I go to get answers to questions not addressed in this document?

If you have additional questions not covered in this FAQ, please reach out to Meraki Technical Support.
