vMX X-Large Relaunch FAQ
vMX X-Large Relaunch FAQ
1. What is Cisco announcing?
On May 15, 2025, Cisco is temporarily turning off orderability for the Meraki vMX X-Large (vMX-XL) virtual router/appliance.
2. Why is this happening?
We are pausing work on the current vMX-XL firmware and migrating the appliance to the same firmware as the one used for vMX-S/M/L. This migration will give you an enhanced experience with improved performance and additional features.
3. Which Meraki MX models are affected?
The Meraki vMX-XL is the only model being temporarily taken off the market. Once the migration to the new firmware is complete, we will relaunch the updated product and reinstate orderability.
The Meraki vMX-S, vMX-M, and vMX-L will remain on the market and orderability will not be affected.
4. When will the new vMX-XL be available?
The timing of the vMX-XL relaunch is to be determined. We will follow up with information about the relaunch of the updated vMX-XL when timing details are available.
5. Can I continue to use my existing vMX-XL instances between May 15, 2025 and the relaunch?
Yes, you may continue to use your current vMX-XLs until the relaunch. In the case of an outage, please contact Meraki Support and they will attempt to restore the appliance; however, no additional support will be provided for any new issues on the vMX-XL.
6. How is the functionality of the current vMX-XL different from the version that will be relaunched in the future?
The current vMX-XL is only available as a VPN concentrator on AWS and lacks the full vMX functionality. The new vMX-XL will have support for all major public cloud providers (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud) along with on-premises support. In addition, the new vMX-XL will be launched with full routed mode support and the advanced security feature set found on other vMX models.
7. Once the relaunch occurs, will I need to replace my existing vMX-XLs with new virtual appliances?
Yes, once the vMX-XL is relaunched, you will need to re-deploy your existing instance, as the new instance will be based off of a new firmware.
Since vMX is a virtual appliance, there will be no need to RMA the device; only re-deployment of the vMX virtual machine will be required. Details about this process will be made available as we get closer to the relaunch.
8. Where can I go to get answers to questions not addressed in this document?
