How to Monitor Configuration Updates on Cisco Meraki Devices

Introduction

Configuration changes made in the Meraki dashboard are saved to the cloud immediately. However, it may take a few minutes for physical Meraki devices to download and apply those changes. This article explains how to monitor the configuration update status for your devices directly from the dashboard.

Monitoring configuration status helps ensure that devices are running the intended configuration and allows you to quickly identify any devices that may not have received the latest updates.

Note: Devices managed with Cisco Meraki Endpoint Management are handled differently and are not covered in this guide. Refer to the SM Documentation for additional information.

Prerequisites

Before following the steps in this guide, ensure the following requirements are met:

  • One or more access point (AP), WAN appliance, teleworker gateway, or switch devices that are registered to a Meraki dashboard network

  • A valid Meraki dashboard license applied to each device

  • Dashboard access with read permissions or higher for the relevant network

  • Devices must have an active connection to the Meraki cloud. Ensure that your upstream firewall permits outbound connections to the Meraki Cloud

Step-by-step instructions

Access points

To view the configuration status of a single access point:

  1. Navigate to Wireless > Monitor > Access Points.

Verification

After completing the steps above, confirm the following outcomes:

  • The Configuration status column or field is visible for the relevant device(s) in the dashboard.

  • Each device displays a status that reflects its current configuration state.

  • Devices that have successfully received and applied the latest configuration changes should display a status of Up to date.

Troubleshooting

Configuration status is not updated after saving changes

  • Allow 1–2 minutes for the dashboard to reflect the updated configuration status on the device. This is expected behavior.

Configuration status is stuck or shows an out-of-date status after 10–15 minutes

  • Verify that your upstream networking device permits outbound connections from the Meraki device to the Meraki Cloud Controller.
