FAQ: USB Modem Deprecation of Support
USB Modem Deprecation of Support
Overview:
With the introduction of MX18.2, Cisco Meraki Engineering deprecated ongoing support for third-party USB cellular modems (USB modems) on Meraki MX and Z appliances.
Now, devices on all versions of MX18 only receive engineering support related to critical security vulnerabilities for their third-party USB modems. All support will be deprecated on June 30, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Why is this deprecation happening?
Meraki Engineering is deprecating ongoing support for third-party USB modems on MX and Z appliances to better focus on the development of new products and features that support the evolving demands of fixed wireless access (FWA) technologies.
You can take advantage of 4G or 5G FWA with the Meraki MG. More info on the Meraki MG and other Cisco FWA products can be found here and here.
What should I do if I need troubleshooting assistance with my USB modem after the introduction of MX18.2?
If you need troubleshooting assistance, please contact Meraki Technical Support.
Please note: Ongoing support for USB modems on Meraki MX and Z appliances has been deprecated. As of the date of this document’s publication, devices on all versions of MX18 are only eligible to receive engineering USB modem support related to critical security vulnerabilities and this may change in the future in compliance with our Support Policy.
How does this change impact devices running firmware versions prior to MX18?
Some MX and Z appliances are capped at firmware versions prior to MX18. Click here to find a list of devices and their maximum runnable firmware.
If you have appliances on MX18, please note that engineering support for their USB modems has been deprecated. If you wish to pursue an alternative connectivity solution, please contact your account manager or reseller to learn more about the Meraki MG.
Will future firmware versions after MX18.2 include engineering support for USB modems?
No, MX18.2 is the last stable release with engineering support for USB modems.
If you upgrade to MX19, you will no longer have access to engineering support related to your USB modems. The recommendation in this instance is to roll back to MX18 until you find an alternative connectivity solution. This should be done before the final deprecation date on June 30, 2026.
What action do I need to take?
We highly recommend you pursue an alternative connectivity solution, such as the Meraki MG, prior to June 30, 2026.
Can I continue using my USB modem?
While we recommend transitioning to a Meraki MG, you may opt to remain on older firmware, such as MX18.2, to continue using a third-party USB modem. However, remaining on older firmware means your appliances will no longer receive any feature upgrades, security updates, or bug fixes.
Will the USB port on my device continue to work after the deprecation date?
The USB port of your device will continue to work as a general power source, but it will not continue to work as an uplink or connectivity solution with a USB modem.
Can I use another third-party solution in place of my current USB modem after the deprecation date?
We cannot advise you on the capabilities of third-party solutions.
Who should I contact if I have additional questions?
