Installing interface modules in an MX400 or MX600
The Cisco Meraki MX400 and MX600 both feature two module bays, capable of housing several different interface modules. This article will provide details on how to remove an existing module, or the bay cover, and install a new module, using an MX400 as the example.
Precautions and warnings
The module bays are self-serviceable, however the steps in this document must be followed and care taken when installing or removing modules. Damage caused to the device as a result of not following these instructions or use of excessive force will void the warranty. All work must be done with the appliance completely powered down, as the interface modules are not hot-swappable.
The module bays only support the Cisco Meraki interface modules indicated on the installation guides for the MX400 and MX600. Attempting to use 3rd party hardware is not supported. Removing an existing module
While the images used in this section illustrate an empty module cover, the steps are the same for removing a previously installed module.
Before proceeding, ensure that the MX400/600 has been completely powered down. Interface modules are not hot-swappable.
- Access the front bottom of the appliance. If working with an unmounted device, the easiest way to do this is by flipping the appliance over and gently laying it down flat on its top.
- For the desired module, remove the indicated screw using a phillips head screwdriver. Keep this screw for later use.
- Remove the existing module or bay cover. Modules may resist at first as they slide out of the internal connector.
The bay should always remain covered. Once an existing module or the bay cover has been removed, a new module or the bay cover should be installed in order to cover the bay. Do not power on the device while the bay is uncovered.
Installing a new module
While the images used in this section illustrate installing an 8-port 1Gbps SFP module, the steps are the same for installing any other module or the bay cover.
Before proceeding, ensure that the MX400/600 has been completely powered down. Interface modules are not hot-swappable.
- Begin with an empty bay after removing the previous module or bay cover, following the instructions above.
- Gently insert the new module upside down. The metal underside of the module will be flush with the bottom of the case, as shown below.
- Once the module has been completely inserted, secure the module using the screw hole indicated. Use the screw that was removed with the previous module or cover.
- At this point the module is completely secured and installed. The appliance may now be installed in an top-up horizontal orientation and powered on.
Once the appliance has finished booting and synchronizing with Dashboard, the new module will be recognized and additional configuration options will be made available.
