Deep Reasoning Mode

Learn how to use Deep Reasoning Mode in the Cisco Meraki AI Assistant for Networking to investigate complex network questions, analyze multiple data points, and develop prioritized recommendations.

Deep Reasoning Mode 

This page provides an overview of Deep Reasoning Mode in the Cisco Meraki AI Assistant for Networking and explains when and how to use it. 

Overview 

Deep Reasoning Mode is a feature of the AI Assistant designed for longer and more thorough investigations of networking questions. Deep Reasoning Mode can gather and analyze available network information, identify likely causes, and provide well-considered, prioritized action plans for the user to evaluate and implement. 

Default Mode is optimized for quickly answering straightforward questions about network and device status, Meraki product information, and other narrowly scoped requests. Deep Reasoning Mode is intended for questions that require analysis across multiple data points, devices, networks, or time periods. 

How to use Deep Reasoning Mode 

Accessing Deep Reasoning Mode 

In the AI Assistant, select the mode toggle and choose Deep Reasoning

 

Deep Reasoning Mode is active when the mode selector is set to Deep Reasoning

 Network Context 

The AI Assistant understands your organization and the network you are currently viewing on the Meraki Dashboard. It uses this network and organization when answering a question. 

To ask about a different network in your organization, explicitly identify the network in your prompt. 

Capabilities and Limitations

Deep Reasoning Mode provides analysis and recommendations. It does not make any configurations to the networks. 

Users must evaluate and implement any recommended configuration or remediation changes themselves. Deep Reasoning Mode does not have permission to modify the network. 

As with all generative AI systems, Deep Reasoning Mode can make mistakes. Users should always validate AI Assistant responses before taking action, particularly when working with critical configurations or active network issues. 

Please Note: If the user has admin rights on the network, Deep Reasoning Mode can use Meraki Live Tools to run diagnostics such as ping, traceroute, retrieving ARP and OSPF neighbor data, etc.  

Response Times and Usage Limits 

Deep Reasoning Mode responses commonly take approximately 1–5 minutes. Detailed investigations may take 10 minutes or longer. 

As answers can take time to generate, users can inspect the thinking dropdown to see what Deep Reasoning Mode is currently doing. Users can navigate away to perform other work and return later to view the completed response. 

Deep Reasoning Mode is currently limited to 20 queries per user per day.

For quick, simple questions, Default Mode is recommended. Use Deep Reasoning Mode when the question requires a more detailed examination of network information. 

Use cases 

Deep Reasoning Mode is useful for investigations that span multiple areas of a network or require the AI Assistant to compare possible causes. 

Network audit and optimization 

Use Deep Reasoning Mode to review network design, hardware lifecycle, redundancy, security posture, capacity, wireless performance, and DHCP health. 

Examples you can try: 

  • Go through my entire organization and find any hardware that has reached end of life or is no longer supported.  Sort the results by urgency. 

  • Check uplink redundancy across my organization and call out any sites that have a single point of failure. 

  • Analyze wireless capacity and coverage across this network. Point out overloaded access points or coverage gaps and recommend whether to add or rearrange access points. 

  • Check DHCP pool capacity across this network and flag any VLANs that are running low. 

For a quick status question about a single device or network setting, Default Mode may be more appropriate. 

Network health 

Use Default Mode when you need a quick read on current network health. Use Deep Reasoning Mode when you want the AI Assistant to investigate the likely causes of network conditions across multiple systems. 

Examples you can try: 

  • Are there any critical alerts on my network in the past 24 hours? 

  • What is wrong with my network in the last 24 hours? Look across WAN, switching, and wireless, identify the most likely causes, and prioritize the next steps. 

Troubleshooting 

Use Deep Reasoning Mode when an issue may involve multiple network domains or possible causes. You do not need to know in advance whether the problem is related to WAN, switching, wireless, VPN, or another area. 

Examples you can try: 

  • Users are saying the network feels slow. Can you look at WAN, switching, and wireless and tell me where the bottleneck is? 

  • Internet is down at [site name]. Can you determine whether the problem is with the WAN connection, switching, or wireless? 

  • We had a site-wide outage between [start time] and [end time]. Walk me through what happened. 

  • Our branch office has lost its VPN connection to headquarters. Can you figure out what went wrong with the Auto VPN tunnel? 

  • A switch port is not passing traffic. Can you check the VLAN assignment, trunk configuration, and link status? 

Changes, alerts, and security 

Use Deep Reasoning Mode to investigate whether configuration changes, firmware updates, alerts, or security events may be related to an issue. 

Examples you can try: 

  • What configuration changes have been made to this network in the last seven days, and could any of them be connected to the problems we are seeing? 

  • We pushed a firmware update last weekend and now we are seeing intermittent drops. Could the two be related? 

  • What critical alerts are active on my network right now, and what is causing them? 

  • Are there any rogue access points on my network? Check the Air Marshal data and see if you can trace any of them back to a switch port. 

  • Look through our firewall rules and flag anything that seems too permissive, conflicting, or no longer needed. 

Continuing an investigation 

You can continue a Deep Reasoning Mode investigation after receiving an answer. Ask the AI Assistant to dig deeper into a finding, examine specific devices or ports, compare possible causes, or connect information across network domains. 

Example: 

  • Those three switches have high PoE utilization. Show me which ports are using the most power and whether any devices could move to another switch.

FAQs 

Does Deep Reasoning Mode require a different prompt style? 

No. The AI Assistant understands plain language, and you do not need to memorize commands or follow a specific format. 

Providing additional detail about the issue, time period, devices, users, or outcome you care about can help focus the investigation. 

Can I switch between modes? 

Yes. Mode selection can be changed with each question. You can also ask follow-up questions, ask Deep Reasoning Mode to dig deeper, or change direction within the same conversation. 

Starting a new conversation when switching topics is recommended but not required. 

Does Deep Reasoning Mode change how customer data is handled? 

No. Using Deep Reasoning Mode does not change how customer data is handled by the AI Assistant. 

How can I provide feedback?

Can Deep Reasoning Mode generate Cisco Workflows 

Deep Reasoning Mode behaves similar to Default mode for Cisco Workflows. 

Can Deep Reasoning Mode manage support cases? 

No, please use default mode to manage support cases.
