Meraki Go - What is PoE (Power over Ethernet)?

What is PoE (Power over Ethernet)?

Meraki Go GS switches come in multiple varieties (more information about the different kinds of GS Switches can be found here). Included in that is the option for PoE or non-PoE versions of the switches. This document will explain what PoE is, and when it is necessary.

Power over Ethernet

Power over Ethernet is a feature available on certain Meraki Go GS Switches that allow the individual ports on the switch to provide electrical power for devices that may need it. Examples of such devices are:

  • Wireless Access Points
  • IP Phones

  • Security Cameras

  • Digital Signage

Depending on the Meraki Go GS you purchased, the total amount of power available to you will differ:

GS-110-24P

PoE and PoE+

Meraki Go GS switches can provide both PoE and PoE+. PoE and PoE+ are also known as 802.3af and 802.3at respectively.
