Support for PPPoE on Cisco Meraki Devices

PPPoE on MX

Cisco Meraki MX Security Appliances support Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE). You may need PPPoE if your ISP requires a username and password to access your DSL connection. PPPoE can be configured on the device's Local Status Page, under the Configure tab by setting the Connection type to PPPoE:

Please note that standard PPPoE is not supported by Cisco Meraki MR Series Access Points (though client-side PPPoE is, see below). A successful workaround for MR Series Access Points is to use a security appliance or router (such as a Cisco Meraki MX, Linksys, Netgear or D-Link) that supports PPPoE and then connect the Cisco Meraki AP to one of the LAN Ethernet ports. Cisco Meraki recommends turning off the wireless functionality of the non-Meraki routers that have wireless capabilities.

Client-side PPPoE on MR

Cisco Meraki MR APs support client-side PPPoE connections. So any client connected wirelessly or wired to an MR AP can connect to a PPPoE server on the remote end. This feature is enabled by our support team on a per network basis.

Note that MR devices themselves cannot currently use PPPoE as a connection type, they simply pass PPPoE traffic/client-side connections.

Note: Client PPPoE function can only be used for MR APs running firmware 25.12 or higher. Also, PPPoE is unrelated to Power over Ethernet (PoE).
