How to Move Devices Between Networks

Click 日本語 for Japanese

Overview

An administrator with access to both networks can move devices between networks within a given organization or between different organizations. Budget up to 15 minutes of downtime for transferred devices to update their configuration

Step-by-step instructions

Moving non-MX devices between networks

To move a Cisco Meraki device from one network to another:

  1. In the Meraki dashboard, navigate to the network containing the device.
  2. Navigate to the Monitor page listing all devices in the network:
  • MG: Navigate to Cellular Gateway > Monitor > Cellular Gateways.
  • MR: Navigate to Wireless > Monitor > Access Points.
  • MS: Navigate to Switching > Monitor > Switches.
  • MV: Navigate to Cameras > Monitor > Cameras.
  1. Select the checkbox next to the device you intend to move.
  2. Select the Move icon, select the destination network from the drop-down, and Select Move.

When moving devices to another network, the destination network must contain the same network type as the device being moved. If the destination network does not appear in the selection, create a corresponding network type and combine it with the destination network before moving. Refer to the  Creating and Deleting Dashboard Networks and Combined Dashboard Networks articles for more details.

Moving MX security appliances between networks

Since a security appliance network contains only one Meraki MX WAN appliance (or two identical devices in a warm spare configuration), ), there is rarely a need to move an MX between networks. As a result, there is no dedicated move tool for the MX.

To move an MX WAN appliance between networks, manually remove it from one network and add it to another. Refer to the Meraki documentation for more information.

Removing an MX WAN from its former network and adding it to a new network will erase the existing configuration the MX held in the old network.

Moving MS switches between networks

When moving a Meraki MS switch to a new network, all settings in the current network will be lost.

The following switch settings are retained and moved to the new network:

  • Name
  • Geolocation address
  • Management address
  • Notes
  • Tags

Switch stacks cannot be moved between networks. To move switches that are part of a stack, break the stack first.

Moving MR access points between networks

When moving a Meraki MR access point to a new network, all settings in the current network will be lost.

The following MR settings are retained and moved to the new network:

  • Name
  • Geolocation address
  • Management address
  • Notes
  • Tags

If the MR starts alerting a Regulatory Domain mismatch after the move, follow the steps in  MR Regulatory Domains to correct it.

Moving MV smart cameras between networks

When moving a Meraki MV smart camera to a new network, you can choose to delete the historical video or retain it. The default option is to delete the video.

When moving MV cameras, choose to either delete the historical video or retain it..png

To retain the video (including cloud archive footage), select Yes when prompted during the move.

Choose yes to retain the video.png

Although the video is retained, the following settings and functionality are affected:

  • Recording Schedule: The recording schedule from the original network is not retained. Re-apply the schedule in the destination network. If the camera was using motion-based retention, motion-based retention continues after the move.
  • Motion Alerts: Motion Alerts must be re-enabled in the destination network.
  • Motion Search: Historical video from the original network will not be motion-searchable. Video captured after the move will be motion-searchable.

All other camera settings are retained when moving to the new network.

If the camera was using a quality and retention profile, the configuration is retained (except for the exceptions listed above), but the camera will not have an assigned profile in the destination network. Re-create the profile in the destination network if needed.

Moving MG devices between networks

When moving a Meraki MG cellular gateway to a new network, all settings in the current network will be lost.

The following device-specific MG configurations are retained and moved to the new network:

  • SIM Slot Configuration (applies to MG41s)
  • APN Configuration
  • Safe Mode (being enabled)

Moving SM devices between networks

Devices enrolled in Systems Manager (SM) networks can be moved between networks. To move an SM device:

  1. Navigate to Systems Manager > Monitor > Devices.
  2. Select the checkbox next to the device to move.
  3. Select Move.
  4. Select the destination network from the Move to network drop-down.
  5. Select Move.

Note: When moving enrolled devices between networks, device tags and owners previously installed are retained. Scheduled tags must be recreated in the destination network. To ensure apps and profiles are not removed, confirm that the apps and profiles exist in the destination network and use the same tags as in the original network.

If apps and profiles should not transfer with the device, remove the tags and owners from the device before moving it.
